Cosmecéuticos: ¿mito o realidad?

Abstract

Resumen Los cosmecéuticos son sustancias que, aplicadas localmente, producen un efecto rejuvenecedor en la piel. Existen múltiples cosmecéuticos en el mercado, sin embargo, son pocos los que poseen fundamento científico para su uso. En este artículo se define el concepto de cosmecéuticos, se mencionan los que se usan actualmente y que han sido estudiados de manera científica, su mecanismo de acción y sus efectos adversos. Estas sustancias mejoran de 43 a 85% la apariencia de la piel. También incluimos un análisis comparativo de los diferentes cosmecéuticos y relacionamos su efectividad rejuvenecedora. Por último, mencionamos que estas sustancias se deben utilizar en forma conjunta con otro tipo de tratamientos rejuvenecedores (quirúrgicos y no quirúrgicos). Abstract Cosmeceuticals are substances which have a rejuvenation effect on the skin. These substances are in between a drug and a cosmetic. Currently there are multiple cosmeceuticals available. However, just a few of them, have a scientific support for their use. In this paper we review: the definition of cosmeceuticals, the different cosmeceuticals currently available, those that have been studied in scientific trials, mechanism of action and adverse effects. These substances improve skin appearance in 45-85% of patients. Also, we include a comparative analysis of the main cosmeceuticals related to their effectivity. Lastly, we suggest that these agents should be used together with other surgical and medical procedures for rejuvenation.
